Early KYW-TV ad for Popeye Cartoons with Barnaby...Only having premiered a couple months before..As I said earlier in these pages, Popeye was aired continuously on Channel 3 from 1957-mid 1970's at least..

WJW-TV ad for the Syndicated"Last of the Mohicans" airing twice a week..Unusual for 1957..

A Pair of ad for part of the November-December 1957 CBS Lineup-Friday Nights-Trackdown at 8PM and Schlitz Playhouse of Stars at 9:30..

TV Guide:Ad for the "Voice of Firestone"Muisc/Opera/Fine Arts series..Originally on NBC Radio and Television from 1928-54..One of the few "highbrow" music series to have a long run on network TV..After it's cancellation by ABC in 1958, Firestone returned to ABC in Fall 1962 Sundays at 10PM but was cancelled again permanently in 1963.

Today we'll take a look at what was aired on my birthday, and during the week of November 30-December 6, 1957. just for the fun of it, (as all of this is, actually) something we did last year, highlighting 1960..This time, we will be looking at my avtual birth date in Canton, Ohio 12-6-57..

Editors Note:I do apologize for the not-so-good quality of the ads presented here. Quality of microfilm of early Magaines from Cleveland Public Library can be spotty at best, which is where I get most of my TV Guide listings from 1953-58....Sometimes you can only do so much with it..You can click any of the ads to read them a little better..

Weekday notes:

CBS-TV was trying to find a program to somewhat compete with the first hour of "Today"..In December 1957 Jimmy Dean held forth in the 7-8 AM hour with country music and variety..

WJW-TV had a Variety Show called "Good Idea", which aired from 8:45-10AM (Capt. Kangaroo was only 45 minutes in length).."Good Idea" was a program with guest interviews and music wrapped around syndicated sitcoms such as The Goldbergs, Halls of Ivy and Amos n Andy.

At 8:55 AM KYW-TV had a news break with Jay Miltner

Also at 8:55, WEWS had a news break with Court Stanton on Monday and Wednesday, and Bill Prentice Tuesday, Thursday and Friday..

Most Obscure Cleveland TV Talk Show-Part One

Glenn Rinker and Linn Sheldon, one of many hosting teams on "Three on the Town" fronting a "WKYC Sales Sheet."

Image Courtesy of Joe and Amy Payne (Rinker)-Glenn Rinker's Daughter..On our links is a whole page on this era of "Three On the Town" also courtesy Joe and Amy Payne.

Most of us that have been regular watchers of Northeast Ohio Television over the last 40 years or so are well aware of all the locally produced weekday news/talk/variety shows that have aired over the years..from Mike Douglas at KYW-3 to Bill Gordon and Dorothy Fuldheim in "One O Cloek Club" on channel 5 from 1959-64, to Dale Young Time mornings on Channel 8 in the 1960's to Morning Exchange on Channel 5 from 1972-99.Along with AM Cleveland (Scott Newell) and "The Dave Patterson Show" on Channel 3 in the 1980's..

I would venture to guess that no one under 50 will have heard of the show we are going to feature. Even as much as I watched Channel 3 (as a kid, admittedly) in the mid-late 1960's, I had never heard of this show, much less watched it. I had not heard of this show until doing "retro-schedules" on Radio-info and Radioinsight.com in the last couple years. This show was the main reason I went to the Cleveland Library last week to do research and found all the articles we've been featuring in recent days.

The show was Called THREE ON THE TOWN..Debuting on WKYC-TV 3 at 1PM Monday September 27, 1965..Its first (of many) hosts were Newsman Bud Dancy, announcer Jay Miltner and Linda Hunt, a newcomer from WPTA-TV Fort Wayne..The Cleveland Press blurb states in a short article,

TV SHOW OF NEWS, VIEWS, OPENS

"Three on The Town, a new local Color program, premiered on WKYC-TV today at 1PM. The Half Hour program includes nation, state and local news, weather, book and theater reviews, interviews with visitng personalities, fashion shows, women's features, live musical entertainment and film features on historical and unusual areas in he Greater Cleveland area."

" Bud Dancy, Jay Miltner, and a new face to Clevelanders, Linda Hunt, are the three hosts for the program. Miss Hunt comes to town from WPTA-TV, Fort Wayne, Ind. Where she had her own afternoon show."

I believe to some extent, this show is an indirect result of The Mike Douglas Show's recent move to Philadelphia..Some sources say that Mike Douglas taped his first Philadelphia show August 30, 1965. On the premiere date of 3 on The Town WKYC moved Mike Douglas to 9AM. Three On the Town very well may have been taped in the former Douglas studio, though I have no proof of that.

According to Variety's review, the BB King Musical Sextet was also part of the show occasionally. The Guest on the show previewed was Larry Robinson (The Diamond Man)..Dancy did a newscast and Miltner a weathercast and announcing duties. Basically Variety said that if the hosts could work together as a unit, the show had great potential..

By early 1966, Dancy was gone to NBC News, and Ms Hunt may have been gone as well..By this time, Veteran TV 3 personality Linn Sheldon was joined by Glenn Rinker from Binghamton, New York..Rinker stayed most of 1966, leaving in December for NBC's WRC Radio/TV in Washington..Rinker Subsequently worked in Miami and Orlando before passing away in 1993..According to James Flanagan of the Plain Dealer in a story at the time of Rinker's departure from Cleveland, Linn Sheldon would become solo host, and the hard news angle would be dropped. Nothing seemed to work consistently ratings wise for WKYC..so 3 on the Town was canceled February 16, 1968 with the final hosts appearing to be Clay Cole and Mark Russell..TV 3 wasnt ready to give up yet, however...

Jay Miltner-WKYC-TV Sign-Off June 1976

Again from tvnut..Repost Of WKYC-TV sign-off from 1976 with veteran announcer Jay Miltner-He was with WKYC/KYW/WNBK and WTAM before that-From 1948-The mid 1980's at least..Probably the most familiar announcing voice in Cleveland TV History..We see a snippet of the end of "Credo"..WKYC's interfaith "Thought for the day" program which ran from the 60's into the 80's..

August 24-30, 1957:A Look Back:

TV Guide Ad for "God Is The Answer" from Rex Humbard's Calvary Temple..Later to be Cathedral of Tomorrow.

TV Guide Ad for Popeye on KYW-TV 3..Starting Sept. 2, 1957.. Anyone that can help improve this picture would be appreciated..

TV Guide Ad for the Channel 8 Debut of Victory at Sea. This award-winning series originally aired on NBC in 1952-53.

Wikipedia Article:

Cleveland Classic Media earlier looked at August 1957...Last Fall to be exact. At the time I was limited in the listings I could get for that period. A recent Trip to the Cleveland Library yielded among other listings, August 24-30, 1957,. That week was Historic as one of the more important Shows in Cleveland TV History debuted, and another show was about to begin a run that wouldnt end until at least the mid 1970's..

Captain Penny's Fun Farm at 9AM and Noon Show had begun a long run several months before.
Jay Miltner at KYW-3 and Court Stanton at WEWS-5 had competing 5 minute newscasts at 8:55 AM daily.
Jim Graner was doing weekend sportscasts at WJW-TV 8 before moving to TV 3, possibly within a few weeks after this..
Ken Coleman and Jim Britt were Televising Indians Baseball Games this season on WEWS-TV 5.
Rex Humbard and "God Is The Answer" aired twice weekly from Calvary Temple., in the same time slots on Channel 8 and WAKR-TV 49.
The two main TV Events at this particular time:

The Debut of the "One O' Clock Club"..Cleveland's first local long-form talk-entertainment show..One O Clock Club made it's bow Monday, August 26, 1957 on WEWS-TV 5. Dorothy Fuldheim hosted from the start..With Ronnie Barrett and The Timekeepers providing the music, the one hour show was a hit from the beginning, expanding to 90 minutes by January 1959 if not before..Also by this time, Bill Gordon came aboard as co-host..The show had a mostly successful 7 year run. The Debut of KYW's Mike Douglas Show in December 1961 hurt One O Clock Club in the ratings eventually and the show was cancelled in 1964.

You Tube Clip of Dorothy Fuldheim and Bill Gordon hosting One O Clock Club, along with part of an interview Dorothy Fuldheim did with Bob Hope..

KYW-TV 3 had not one but two full page TV Guide ads for the coming premiere of Popeye The Sailor Theatrical Cartoons on Channel 3 beginning September 2, 1957. The show began airing 5:30-6PM weeknights. At first, there was no host indicated for the half hour show, but Linn Sheldon, having been at Channel 8 earlier in 1957, most certainly have landed at channel 3 by the end of 1957 to introduce Kid show host Barnaby. Popeye remained on TV 3 with all the theatrical and made for TV cartoons well into the 1970's

King Features Made For TV Popeye Cartoon "Spare Dat Tree"..From the early 1960's.. Special thanks to YouTube member mrmanok. I grew up on these cartoons watching Barnaby and Woodrow..

Channel 3 in Cleveland-60 years old in 2008.

On October 31, 2008 WKYC-TV Channel 3 will celebrate their 60th anniversary on the air. While I would hope personally that Gannett would be planning an appropriate celebration, I'd like to begin the celebration a bit early..

In learning how to use YouTube, I have tried different software to edit videos..Been using Windows Movie Maker to make most of the things I have on YouTube..Thought Once again I would try something different..A Slideshow History of WKYC-TV..

Using the 35th Anniversary Video I featured awhile back with the 50's-60's vintage Audio clips from Jerry Immel, I have created a 5-minute slideshow featuring Faces, logos and ID's Through the History of TV 3 up to 1983..One problem..There is only between 3-4 minutes of slides and 5 minutes of audio..

Featured either in audio or video/slide form:

Linn Sheldon
Clay Conroy
Bud Dancy
Jim Graner
Wally Kinnan
Virgil Dominic
Doug Adair
Pete French
Jay Miltner
David Hawthorne
Gordon Ward
Tom Field
Mile Douglas
Jerry G. Bishop
Del Donahoo
Mona Scott

Cleveland Broadcasting Heritage Museum

Since I've had access to the Internet on a regular basis..Over 10 years or so, Ive learned a great deal about the fine Museums in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago that celebrate Television and Radio Heritage..I always thought, with Cleveland's radio history, there should be something similar, albeit on a smaller scale, for Cleveland and Northeast Ohio..

In the last several months, Jim Davison has opened such a museum at the Colonial Arcade, 530 Euclid Avenue in Downtown Cleveland, filled with memorabilia of Radio in Cleveland, mostly from the top 40 era, but also dating as far back as the 1930's. The Museum is located in the basement of the Colonial Arcade, sharing space with the Baseball Heritage Museum.

From a late January visit to the Museum, here are pictures of some of the exhibits:

Early Poster of Alan Freed's "Moondog" Show on WJW Radio..sponsored by "Record Rendezvous"

KYW-1100 Poster with pictures of the airstaff..This would be around 1963-65..

WJW-85 Welcome sign, with a WDOK 102.1 T-shirt, among other items..

Full Page Ad of Bill Randle of WERE-1300 from a Trade Magazine in the 1950's..

Vintage 1960's WCRF-FM Microphone..

1947 WGAR "Range Riders" Calendar

From 2 different eras..a 1944 Presidential Election Poster from WTAM and What I believe are some 1970's pictures of the WGAR Air Staff..

WTAM program schedule from the early 1950's. Johnny Andrews is featured here on the "Morning Bandwagon" Jay Miltner was a featured singer in the WTAM Orchestra before becoming an icon as WNBK/KYW/WKYC announcer for over 30 years..

Uncle Jake Record from Gene Carroll's early days at WEWS. While he had been known as half of comedy duo Gene and Glenn on NBC Radio in the 1930's..Few realize Carroll played Lena the Maid on NBC Radio's Fibber McGee and Molly in part of the 1946-47 season..

These are just a few of the exhibits. The Museum is generally open 11AM-1:30PM Monday-Friday and Admission is free..

Comment:KYW-3 was carrying Tonight on delay in February 1957, but by August 1957, after Jack Paar began hosting Tonight had been dropped in favor of Movies on KYW. WEWS was not carrying "Tonight" in August..Presumably they started carrying Tonight in 1957 and would do so until fall 1965 when Tonight would return to NBC owned WKYC-TV 3. For a while in Cleveland, "The Tonight Show" was not being carried at all..

Listings courtesy TV Guide..Some information from the Brooks/Marsh Prime Time Directory

Cleveland TV..December 1956

Plain Dealer ad for "Morning Surprise" with Tom Haley and "Mr. Rivitz" on KYW-TV 3

Ad for "Toyland Express" presented by something called the "Toy Guidance Council"

"Brod" Crawford stars in Highway Partol sponsored by Kroger on WKBN-27 Youngstown Tuesdays at 9:30, Preempting Red Skelton..

Ad for "Merry Christmas Mr. Baxter" on the Alcoa Hour Sunday, December 2 at 9:00 on NBC (3-21)

November 16, 1957..The first mention I could find in Halles advertising for Mr. Jingeling(Max Ellis), who may have begun playing the Character on TV in 1957

For our first holiday posting, I thought we'd look at December 1956, partly through the pages of Cleveland TV Guide, December 1-8, 1956..

WEWS was well into the "Holiday Spirit" with shows like Toyland Express(15 minutes) with Jimmy Nelson and his Dummies, shown Saturday at 10:45 and 11:30 and Sunday at 9:45 and 11:45 AM..

Santa Claus Monday, Thursday and Friday at 4:45..

There was also"Toy Preview" weekdays at 12:40 and 6:25 PM..My guess here is that Halles sponsored this, though it's not said so in the listings and no host is mentioned. While Mr. Jingeling was created for Halles in 1956, it appears he only made store appearances and possible other personal appearances.."Mr. Jingeling" as noted above was not mentioned by name in Halles ads till November 1957..

WJW-TV 8 featured Nelson Olmstead's "Ohio Story" weeknights at 6:30 with stories including Medina, Ohio as "Bee Captital" of the world..(To this day, Medina High School Sports Teams are nicknamed "The Bees") Toledo Zoo in Wintertime, and"Darling Nellie Gray" writer Ben Hamby..

Ron Penfound was doing WEWS sign-on news Saturdays at 8:55 and possibly hosting Fun Farm, as Mary Ellen Sussex had left for Florida a month earlier..

Romper Room was carried on WJW-TV 8 weekdays at 9AM with "Miss Pat" (Pat Ryan Dopp)The franchise moved to Channel 5 in 1958 with Barbara Plummer until 1971..

"Mr. Rivitz" was a character played by Jay Miltner in the Saturday morning "Nuts and Bolts" series on KYW-TV 3 and as part of Tom Haley's "Morning Surprise" weekdays at 9AM..A similar character, Mr. Rivets, was played by a different actor at WPTZ/WRCV-3 in Philadelphia from 1954-56..

Ken Goodman Weather-KYW-TV 3-1962, 1964

Ken Goodman Weather report slide-1962

KYW-TV Logo from 1961-63...The program promos for One Step Beyond and Biography feature this logo prominently..

Hello:
I mentioned in our last posting from December 30 that I hoped the coming year would bring more Vintage Cleveland TV Video to light..I honestly didnt think anything would come along this soon..Just found this on YouTube..A series of commercials and two late night weather forecasts by KYW-3's Ken Goodman from the 1962-64 era..Commercials included two Vernors spots and a White Rock Beverages ad..Along with two program promos for "One Step Beyond" and David L. Wolper's "Biography" shows. Some other thoughts:

The first Weather Forecast was sponsored by Sinclair Oil and the announcer was Jay Miltner..It was on a Sunday Night during the "Big Movie"..Goodman says to "Check With Dick Goddard" during the Noon Eyewitness News the next day about an arctic air mass coming through the Cleveland area..

The second (Saturday Night) weather report was sponsored by Vernors and I think I caught Ken saying "Stay tuned now for Gib (Shanley)" but the video cut off at "Gib"..While the video is clocked at 15:11, there are several blank spots..The video actually ends at around 14:00-14:30..Thanks to hhg on YouTube, who uploaded this in October 2010..Some of the video isnt in real good shape, but to have this at all is a real find..

WNBK-Early 1950's..

From TV Today January 1953:"Impact Television" ad for the 6-7PM weeknight WNBK offerings, including Tom Manning, who goes back to the 1930's at WTAM/WNBK

From December, 1952 TV Today:Ad for the "Ladies Shows" on WNBK-TV. Mildred and Gloria were also on WTAM Radio for a number of years..Gloria Brown was at channel 4, then channel 3 until the early 60's..

Full 2-Page TV Guide ad from 1953 showing the nightly at 6PM westerns block on WNBK-4. In the early years of television, western shorts were a staple of programming on just about all channels.

Second of a series on WKYC-TV's 60th anniversary..focusing more on the early 1950's.

As we said earlier, The first early-morning TV programming in Cleveland premiered January 14, 1952, with the debut of Dave Garroway's Today Show on NBC..Channel 4 was becoming established as Cleveland's "Community Station" with a lot of local programming..News was still an afterthought, with only Camel News Caravan and a five minute report at 6:45 and 11PM weeknights. Most everything was live, as announcers like Jay Miltner and Tom Haley did some newsbreaks and hosted shows throughout the weekdays at Channel 4..

Below is the programming schedule for April 19-25, 1952 for WNBK..About a year before upping their power and changing from Channel 4 to Channel 3..

Cleveland Television-Just for Kids (and Grownup Kids Too)

Left to Right:Franz The Toymaker (Ray Stawiarski) Woodrow The Woodsman (Clay Conroy) Barnaby (Linn Sheldon) and Ron Penfound (Captain Penny)..From Clevelandseniors.com
This Picture is taken from a Early Mc Donald's Ad-Probably mid 1960's. The Caption on top reads:"Look For The Golden Arches...where Quality starts fresh... every day" I find it intersting that all 4 hosts..from competing stations..would take a picture together..though they were probably friends outside the studio..

The following edited text was taken from a posting of mine at the Golden Age Cartoons Forum over a year ago

"Some of my fondest memories as a youngster in Canton, Ohio from 1963-71 or so was watching many of the wonderful Children's show hosts out of Cleveland...I am probably biased, but I dont think there were many better hosts outside of New York or Chicago..

Baranby on KYW/WKYC 3 afternoons arond 4:30 and Saturdays from 7-9 AM with Popeye, Dick Tracy, Mr. Magoo, Wizard of Oz Cartoons, etc..It was said he did his shows ad lib..with only a prop chest to help him along..Linn Sheldon had been a stage and movie actor before doing a lot of early Cleveland TV from the beginning (1947-48)..He played Barnaby from 1957-88..ending at channel 43..His memoir, Barnaby and Me, is quite entertaining though sad at times..A good read if you can find it..

Captain Penny (Ron Penfound) from WEWS-TV 5, did shows at Noon and late afternoon, usually 4:30 or 5..He showed Deputy Dawg and other Terrytoons as well as Magilla Gorilla, Quick Draw McGraw, Rocky And Bullwinkle, Peter Potamus, Batfink, the Three Stooges and Cliff Norton "Funny Mann's" Live action show..He along with Barnaby had a gentle way about them that translated well to the kids..He had Jungle Larry from Cedar Point and Pooch Parade..to try and give dogs a new home.He was on from 1957-71.

Woodrow Woodsman (Clay Conroy) was at first Barnaby's sidekick at KYW-3 but later got his own 9AM show..He had an "Enchanted Forest" with puppets Talkington the Owl and Voracious the Peanut Butter&Jelly sandwich eating elephant..He was in Cleveland from the early 60's to 1965, 1970-72 (WKYC) and 1997-2000 (WJW-8) from 1966-70 he took the Character to Detroit's WJBK-2..

Link to a nice bio..http://www.detroitkidshow.com/clay_conroy.htm

Franz The Toymaker (WJW-8) roughly 1964-70...As we didnt get channel 8 very well in my location, I never saw him, but he wore a Bavarian type outfit (see above) in pictures I've seen and he did crafts from what i heard.

Mr Jingeling-Created for Halles Department Store, Mr. Jingeling began appearing on WEWS-TV 5 during the Christmas season I believe in 1956 or so..He would appear on Captain Penny's Cartoon shows beginning either Thanksgiving or the day after and would continue Monday-Friday visits until Christmas Day.. He was Santa's "Head Elf" who would have a multipart story for the kids each day.. Portrayed first by Max Ellis, who passed away, then Channel 5 staff member Earl Keyes from 1964 on..Keyes continued as Jingeling..even after the TV shows stopped until his passing on December 26, 2000..Jingeling made the rounds of Channel 5, 8, 3 and 43 till the mid 1980's..Was always a highlight at Christmas to a kid from Canton..to a degree it made Halles and Cleveland seem so much closer if that makes sense."

.There is yet another carrying on the Jingeling tradition..http://www.mrjingeling.com/

Commentary:

With the retirement of Big Chuck and Little John from Fox8, it has been said by some friends of mine that Local TV will have lost it's "soul". I couldnt agree more..There was a "connection" to the viewer..as if the host was talking directly to one person in the audience..While I am talking about the Cleveland hosts here, you could name any city in the USA..Viewers had their "connections".. and with the cookie cutter, generic Television of today there is a loss of value to the viewer if that makes sense..The viewer is just a commodity to sell rather than a human being..Sorry to be overdramatic..but there is something lost..maybe innocence, that we will never get back..Great to have the memories though..
