Early years of WCRF-FM..

To tell the story of the early years of Moody Radio outlet WCRF, it is necessary to go back to the 20's when radio was just getting established.

In 1925, an emergency program by two Moody Bible Institute cornet players led to the Institute establishing WMBI-AM in 1926.

Through the 1930's and 40's WMBI became a leader in Christian radio through doing everything as professionally as possible and developing many programs for eventual syndication to other areas, including Drama, Music, and teaching programs..

Fast forward to the 1950's. FM 103.3 had been used from approximately 1949-1951 for WCUO-FM in Cleveland operated by Labor Unions, who also operated WDET Detroit..WCUO closed down 1n 1951 and the license turned back into the FCC.

In 1958, A Group of Christian Businessmen in the the Cleveland area wanted to establish a Christian Radio Station and turned to the Moody Bible Institute for help and guidance. MBI agreed to help fund and staff the new station, provided the Cleveland area eventually support the station financially on its own.

The hours of the station were limited to 1-9PM Monday-Saturday and 9AM-9PM Sunday. John Rader was the first station manager.

 Programming at first was just about all from Chicago, using programs and titles well known to WMBI listeners and nationally syndicated Christian programming..

Another group was the Melody Four Quartet..The same four men sang together for over 50 years..Glenn Jorian, Clair Hess, Bill Pearce and Ray Felten. For many years a part of WCRF programming, Individual members also had programs on Moody Radio at one time or another..

Things started slowly for WCRF, as FM was still just getting established.  I heard a story that WCRF sold FM radios at cost just to get people to listen at first..As the station grew, people trusted the message of the Gospel being brought forth via radio..

Part of getting out the message about WCRF included "Radio Rallies" in which staff from Chicago would come to area churches and introduce Moody Radio in person. Below are ads/articles for a couple of such rallies..

In 1960 New York State native Bob Devine arrived at WCRF as a producer and engineer..Eventually becoming host of the Clockwatcher morning program from about 1965 till his retirement in 2000..He was a fine gentleman and broadcaster, by far and away the most recognized voice on WCRF, also doing Storybook Room for the Network..

Many memorable folks have worked at, or are currently at WCRF, including Alice Andrews, Paul Carter, Mark Zimmerman, Ron Bartlebaugh, Sylvia Docking, Dick Lee, Brandt Gustafson and a host of others..WCRF went 24 hours January 1, 1980 and began, with Moody Broadcasting Network Satellite delivery of  programming in 1982.  WCRF also has repeater stations all over Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania..

I have many fond memories of listening to WCRF in the 1970's through the 1980's.Amazingly some of the same programs aired during the first week schedule continued well into the 1990's and beyond..WCRF has left a legacy of quality Christian Radio in Northeast Ohio and I am grateful for that..

WEWS-TV 5.."On Stage"

Undated photo of Alan Douglas, Producer of the "On Stage" program aired Tuesday Nights for 10 weeks in 1956..He later would be known as a radio and TV talk show host with "The Alan Douglas Show" on WEWS and later WKBF-61, and being the first host of the Morning Exchange in the first few months of 1972.

     When WEWS-TV 5 became an ABC affiliate March 2, 1955, it left hours of programming to fill, especially in the daytime. ABC was definitely a 3rd place network in the 1950's, and it wasn't that unheard of to routinely pre-empt network programs for syndicated or local offerings..Local news was also not as important as it would become later on..

With this in mind, Alan Douglas got the idea of a locally produced live "Play of the Week" WEWS agreed to open the Tuesday 11-12 Midnight time slot for Douglas. The show was called "On Stage" and it was sponsored, at least initially by Stern Brothers Plumbing Company..

     The idea was to make each play a completely local production, from writers to technical support to acting..Actors were drawn from The Cleveland and Lakewood Playhouse, as well as local print and broadcast media.  A particularly ambitious effort, considering that  the budget you could do on a local level was a mere percentage of what could be done on a network level by shows like Playhouse 90 and Studio One.

April 12, 1956:Epilogue of the total "On Stage" effort following the airing of the last live broadcast April 10 by Cleveland Plain Dealer TV/Radio editor George Condon..

It was suggested by Condon that quality might be better if they just did one play a month rather than trying to do one a week, though On Stage never returned after it's 10-week run ended April 10, 1956.

Alan Douglas would be involved with another live TV effort on Channel 5 in Summer 1957..Johnny
McQueen, which lasted 9 weeks..

Here is an attempt at a episode guide finding out as much as possible about each production..Title, writers and actors. I used the Plain Dealer Archive and the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram through TV writer Dorothy Funk to get some info on 9 of the 10 episodes. Could not find anything on the April 3, 1956 program..

Tonight I want to, for those who aren't regular readers of the C-C-M Facebook Page, update some things that have been added  to that page since it started in January 2010.  Several regular features are now part of the page, some daily, some weekly..

FRED REINERT CLASSIC SATURDAY-Since late 2012, we have been featuring drawings of iconic Plain Dealer artist Fred Reinert, who drew local and national tv related drawings as part of The Saturday Weekly TV section from late 1953 into 1956.  Posting once each Saturday Morning.  We are now into Spring 1955.

CLASSIC TV/RADIO DAILY-Picking out a random month/year corresponding to today's date-Posting schedules and program highlights for that day..

THROWBACK THURSDAY (TBT)-Taking a page from the Facebook tradition of posting "throwback" pictures of the past, This feature takes a rare local or national broadcast from anywhere from 30-50 years ago and posts the video-Usually prefer half hour complete shows, but a lot of good things we've shown that are of shorter length..

SUNDAY SPECIAL-Ads, photos or short articles concentrating on Sunday programming, which seemed especially early in TV history networks and local stations spent more money on ads for Sunday than on any other day of the week..

Of course, we still post other things randomly on Facebook as we find them..

Fun With Charades (1952-59)

February 11, 1954:IGA advertisement in the Plain Dealer featuring their sponsorship of "Fun With Charades" on WEWS-TV 5 Sundays at 4:30 PM.

     Hello folks: For our first post in a very long time we will look at a Local Game Show, FUN WITH CHARADES, that had a healthy 7 year run on Cleveland TV..

     First mention of the show in the Plain Dealer, which we could assume is it's premiere date, was Sunday November 9, 1952 on WEWS Channel 5 at 2:30 PM. The show aired mostly on Sundays throughout its run. First host mentioned, on the December 28, 1952 telecast was Linn Sheldon who basically hosted  the 1952-53 season.

Cleveland TV Veteran Joe Berg, known as "Mr. Lollipop" on Channel 5, hosted the June 14, 1953 telecast. Fun with Charades pitted 2 community groups or high school teams against each other in a game of Charades, similar to the popular national show Pantomime Quiz. During the Channel 5 run , there were occasional multi-week tournaments..

Fun with Charades had moved to 4;30 Sundays by October 11, 1953..By December 4. 1953 Bob Dale takes over as Emcee

Bob Dale would continue as host through March 11, 1956 show, which was the final show on channel 5.  The show would have a couple other time changes before it's WEWS cancellation.


Note on the move to channel 8 and auditioning for an emcee.


March 18, 1956 would see a new season and a new station and time for "Charades" WXEL (soon to be WJW-TV 8) tapped Jim Doney as host. with the show airing Sunday at Noon.  By January 6, 1957 the show aired at 2:30 once again, with another time change January 12, 1958 at 2PM, and Doney still hosting..The show ended it's WJW-TV run April 6, 1958. 

Notice of Fun with Charades return to TV on KYW-TV 3 October 12, 1958.  Along with other TV/radio items of interest.

Fun with Charades made a last run, now on KYW-TV 3 with host "Big" Wilson until the apparent final show of the series February 22, 1959.  Surprising that no one else has tried to revive the concept locally since then.  The National "Pantomime Quiz/Stump The Stars" ran as late the 1970's and NBC aired Win Lose or Draw for a few years as a "Pantomime" type show..

Do You remember?..Single season sitcoms..

Over the last few months on the Facebook page I've been posting a number of relatively rare opens and closes of sitcoms, game shows and other vintage shows from a YouTube poster with the username of "Gilmore Box".  That name is taken from a character played by Bob Sweeney on "The Brothers" a sitcom that lasted a single season on CBS-TV in 1956.

"Gilmore Box" is aka Bob Leszczak, who has an affinity for what are known as "Single Season Sitcoms".  Those that had high hopes for success , but because of either a bad time slot, behind the scenes problems, or just lack of quality, lasted just one season (or less).  Leszczak is a former radio host (Bob O' Brien) that has put out a great resource that details these sitcoms in alphabetical order, with a lot of previously unpublished detail, such as production company, producers and directors, and other information that puts out the history of these shows in marvelous detail. 

The best parts of the book are the pictures..Many unpublished before, and interviews with actors that took part in the sitcoms.  Names such as Jackie Joseph Lawrence, Sherry Alberoni, Tab Hunter, Lee Meriwether and a host of other actors that were interviewed by Bob for the project..

Another angle is Big movie stars that were thought to be a shoo-in for success (Jimmy Stewart) only lasted one season in their sitcom.  While this is not a book you would read start to finish necessarily, it is a fantastic resource for shows that many of us had forgotten about, if we remembered them in the first place..Bob has done a great job here, and I highly recommend this book..

We've written on the Facebook Page occasionally about Tom Field. who was one of the early TV newscasters in Cleveland..His active years were 1940-into the 1980's at WNBK/KYW-TV, WTAM Radio, WRCV Philadelphia, WEWS and finally as News Director of WDBN-FM, Medina..Here is an in-depth article published in the Plain Dealer Sunday Magazine dated July 8, 1973, Courtesy of our good friend Jerry Immel.  He had already been at WDBN several years and was very content with where he was..One story..Field was asked to send samples of his work to NBC in New York..He wasn't sure why but he got an answer that "we decided to go with our guy on the West Coast"..that "guy" was Chet Huntley, chosen to team with David Brinkley on NBC nightly news..It could have been The "Field-Brinkley Report. "

Cleveland Barons On TV/Radio-1949-50

Sadly, since the failure of the National Hockey League Cleveland Barons in 1978, Pro Hockey has been very much a minor sport in the Cleveland area, with several teams coming and going..

The Lumberjacks had some success, but were ultimately sold to an owner with short finances and folded (along with the whole league)..

The San Jose Sharks brought a second American Hockey League Barons in from 2001-06, but once George/Gordon Gund sold their Hockey interests, the team lost interest in being here and moved to Worcester, Mass after the 2005-06 season..

The current Lake Erie Monsters (Still think Cleveland should be in the name somewhere) have been among the top teams in AHL attendance the last few years..

In saying all that, I want to look back to a time where Minor League Hockey was major sports news in Northeast Ohio..The Original Cleveland Barons of The American Hockey League were the classiest organization in the AHL..Players would spend years in Cleveland, preferring the Barons to life in the NHL..

The Barons won numerous division titles and 9 Calder Cups from 1937-73..The Plain Dealer and the other major Northeast Ohio Newspapers covered the Barons with front page stories and coverage rivaling the Indians and Browns for the most part..The 1949-50 season was 2 seasons removed from a 1948 Calder Cup Title during Cleveland's "Championship Season".  The Barons were represented by a six station radio network with Ron Cook as Play By Play man..

Games were also televised over WEWS-TV 5..there was a schedule of 20 home dates televised-19 Saturday and one Sunday Afternoon..A couple of fellows named John Foley and Len Roof did play-by-play and color, respectively. Can't find much solid Info on Foley, though he appeared to do Barons TV for at least 2 seasons.  Roof appears to have been an amateur athlete that turned to broadcasting for awhile.  He subbed for Bob Neal on TV Indians Games in this era when there was a controversy between rival breweries sponsoring Neal's other radio commitments on one hand, and the Indians on the other..Roof also did local College Football on WJMO and WERE..

The way games were broadcast in this era was much different than today..On both Radio and TV, Only the third period was broadcast, meaning that most often the broadcast/telecast would not start until 9:30 or 10:00 or later for night games..I guess it wasnt worth it for sponsors to buy a 2-3 hour window for games..

It would seem that WJW Radio had a pregame show at 9:45 with the action starting at 10. WEWS would join in progress at 10 for the Saturday games..

There was also many Saturday Nights that a wrapup show. "With The Barons" would air late at night on Channel 5.. As for the Barons themselves, they finished first in the AHL Western Division with a 45-15-10 record for 100 points, 19 points ahead of the second place Indianapolis Capitals, though the Capitals beat the Barons 4 games to 0 in the Calder Cup Finals in 1950..This is the only Cleveland Pro Hockey Team ever to hit 100 points during a regular season..

Goalie Johnny Bower, after many years in Cleveland, would go on to a Hall Of Fame Career for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Below is the Barons' Record for the televised games only.  As indicated above, all telecasts were at home, though WJW Radio and its Barons Network broadcast all games, Home and Away..A couple of notes:The team was 18-1-1 in these games, and average attendance was 8,684 fans for the televised games..Listing includes W-L, final score and attendance for each game.

I realize people here are'nt big hockey fans for the most part, but I wanted to show in some way, just how big the sport was in The Cleveland area, and try to dig out some history that may be lost otherwise..It would be great to find some old radio games from this era, or even the 60's-early 70's..
