Hello Cleveland:Early WKYC Days

Anyone who has read Cleveland Classic Media from the beginning (March 2007) knows I have written a lot about NBC affiliate WNBK/KYW/WKYC-TV, especially detailing "The Swap" of WNBK to Philadelphia (as WRCV)and WPTZ/KYW-AM Westinghouse to Cleveland (As KYW-AM-FM-TV) in 1956 and the subsequent reversal of the swap in June 1965..The "Hello Cleveland" ad above was featured in local newspapers upon NBC's return to Cleveland. Several months ago, a reader wanted to see the full page ad, which was shown partially in WKYC anniversary specials. I found this at CSU, In their Cleveland Press Microfilm Collection, while in Cleveland Monday for other research..I thought also we would feature three random schedules from the early years of WKYC-TV..

First TV Guide listing for KYW-TV 3 Eyewitness News at Noon Monday, May 1, 1961. One of the first, if not the first, full 30 minute local TV Newscast in the USA. The name "Eyewitness News" had been used at KYW-TV since April, 1959..They were the first station in the Country to use that title for a Newscast..

Dick's Triumphant return to Cleveland-March 28, 1966 as the main weather forecaster at CBS affiliate WJW-TV 8 after several months at KYW-TV 3 in Philadelphia..

Cleveland Weather forecasting has had as interesting a history as the Cleveland Weather itself..As in most TV markets, Cleveland has had an assortment of personalities doing weather foreccasts dating from the early 1950's. Most early weather forecasters, were doing weather as a sideline to other duties on TV and radio. Joe Finan, "The Atlantic Weatherman" was doing his thing on WNBK while doing radio on WTAM in the early 1950's..as was Captain Glenn Rowell, also on WNBK even earlier than Finan..WEWS-TV had "Weathergirls" such as "Sunny" Day, Susan Sadler and Miss Barbara Plummer, who was also doing "Romper Room". TV 5 also had Ron Penfound "Captain Penny" as weekend and sometime weeknight weatherman in the 1960s. The main Weatherman at WJW through the 1950's was Announcer Howard Hoffman, although Jim Doney and Doug Adair had done weather forecasts as well..Hoffman remained at TV 8 from 1949 into the 1980's.

May 1, 1961 would bring a number of firsts to KYW-TV 3.Possibly the first half hour local newscast in the USA..As well as possibly the first AMS Seal (No. 45) weatherman in Cleveland TV History,,Dick Goddard..

Dick was born February 24, 1931 in Akron, Ohio. After serving in weather related duties in the US Air Force in the early 1950's, Goddard graduated in 1960 from Kent State, majoring in Drama and Broadcasting..

Dick is also an avid cartoonist. He turned down an invitation to interview at Disney Studios in California, opting to stay in Cleveland and try his hand at TV on KYW-TV 3 with Eyewitness News starting Monday, May 1, 1961. Station staffers told him later that they had a pool going to see how long he would last..

Dick tells the story of his first day on the air, when he decided to tell a weather interest story about a Croaking Frog..Only he was so nervous, it came out "Froaking Crog"

After Dick got settled in, he became the most popular weatherman in Cleveland up to that time. The Other TV 3 newscasts in May 1961 included Bill Jorgensen at 6:30 and 11PM, Big Wilson doing Weather at 6:40 and Jim Gerard on Weather at 11:10..Jim Graner with Sports at 11:15..

Becasue of the forced return of Westinghouse's KYW to Philadelphia and NBC's WRCV (WKYC) to Cleveland, Dick Goddard went with Westinghouse to Philadelphia in June, 1965. He and his wife never felt comfortable in Philly. Thoiugh he says they were treated well, it was never "home" to them.. His replacement in Cleveland, Wally Kinnan, had been very popular in Philadelphia..

In early 1966, Goddard entertained offers from all 3 Cleveland Stations, electing to go to WJW-TV 8 because he was a big fan of the Browns and TV 8 sportscaster Ken Coleman, only Coleman left Cleveland a month later..He returned to Cleveland at Channel 8 March 28, 1966 as part of the City Camera News Team at 6 and 11PM with Doug Adair, Joel Daly and Coleman, later replaced by Frank Gleiber . Previous evening forecaster Bob "Hoolihan the Weatherman" Wells was moved to Noon and Weekend Weather before gaining even greater fame on the Hoolihan and Big Chuck Show, replacing Ghoulardi Friday nights in December 1966.

Goddard became the most popular weatherman in Cleveland TV History over more than 42 years at Channel 8..Emceeing live shows all over town, Hosting the Woolybear festival for 35 years..The largest one day festival in Ohio. He also has served as Cleveland Browns Statistician for many years, as well as doing numerous skits for Big Chuck and Lil John..

If any weather forecaster could be called "beloved" it would be Dick Goddard, at least in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio..

Rest In Peace, Gibber..

Gib Shanley with Jim Graner, KYW/WKYC-3 Sports anchor..Another Class act..The two worked on the Cleveland Browns Radio broadcasts from 1961-74..Graner passed away in 1975. Shanley also hosted "Quarterback Club", The Browns weekly Highlight show on WEWS-5.

Gib with TV-5 weatherman Don Webster..They were always poking fun at one another..

Cleveland Sportscaster Gib Shanley passed away late yesterday afternoon following complications from pneumonia..He was 76. He came to Cleveland in 1961 as play by play voice of the NFL Cleveland Browns,,Calling, with Jim Graner the last major Cleveland pro sports championship in 1964..He worked for a time as sports anchor at KYW-TV 3 before landing at WEWS-TV 5 where he would be lead sports anchor until 1984..After a couple years in California, Gib returned to Cleveland at WUAB-TV's "Ten O Clock News" as Sports Director from 1988-96..He then returned to Channel 5, doing sports commentary.

His biggest controversy, however, had nothing to do with sports..He burned an Iranian flag during a sportscast in 1979 in protest of The Iran hostage situation at the time..While station executives were'nt pleased, Gib became a hero to many around the country for standing up for the US..even in a small way..

Gib was known for his class, and unflinching honesty when it came to the sports teams..He told it like it was, even when the teams were not so good, but he also had a dry wit, which made what he said easier to take..Gib was also known for helping young talent..Many of today's sports anchors in Cleveland looked to Gib as a mentor and role model..He was also respectful to the print media, even in smaller markets, where he would always lend a hand if a media member needed help with a Browns story..

It seems the legends are all leaving us way too soon..Prayers go out to his family and friends..

I thought that in light of Dick Goddard's 79th Birthday (Feb. 24, 2010)..We'd present this encore post..A tribute to Dick we posted in November 2008..Finally had a chance to meet Dick at the 2009 Ghoulardifest...Very personable, nice man..

September 1965-NBC Week

WAKR-TV Ad for tape delayed High School Football Games. It doesnt say here or in the listing, but I would assume Sports Director Bob Wylie was part of the telecast team.

WKYC TV Guide Ad about being the "Full Color Station". The Don Adams Special mentioned in the ad appears below:

Taking a brief look at September 1965..Carl Stern and Bud Dancy were still the news team at Channel 3, with Wally Kinnan Weather and Jim Graner Sports..Labor Day, September 6, found WYTV-33 and WAKR-49 Carrying a Giants-Dodgers Baseball Game. The Indians had a home doubleheader with Washington so The Game was blacked out on Channel 5.

77 Sunset Strip reruns "Return" to TV 5 at 4PM weekdays on Sept. 6. followed by Captain Penny's Comedy Clubhouse for an hour and a half from 5-6:30.

Local Color programming on WJW-TV 8 included Franz The Toymaker Monday-Friday at 9AM, some 5 minute newscasts and editorials,Jim Doney's Adventure Road at 5:15 weekdays (moving to 5PM Sept. 13) and Hoolihan Weather at 11:15

Channel 5 aired "Comedy Clubhouse" in Color. Also Certain Cartoon Shows and Johnny Carson, (which would move to TV 3 in November 1965.)

TV 3 aired no local color to this point, though Many NBC shows were in color, and Channel 3 would introduce Local color September 13, 1965 according to the ad above..

It was around this time (mid 1960's) that the networks really began pushing the fall season. This may have been the first time NBC really began to use "NBC Week" as a yearly tag for introducing their fall premiere..September 12-19, 1965 was "NBC Week"..With 15 new shows. Most not lasting more than one season..

Channel 3's Westinghouse Years-Personalities

The KYW-3 years between 1956-65 represented some of the best years in Cleveland Television..When the talent came out and really established themselves as enduring broadcast personalities. Linn Sheldon..Had made a name for himself at TV 5 before this..His Character "Barnaby" was said to be among the most popular ever in Cleveland..From 1956-88 he WAS Barnaby on channel 3 and Later 43..Tom Haley..Had already been at WNBK since about the beginning and would be at channel 3 TV and radio an astonishing 49 years..till 1997 when he signed off "Today in Cleveland" with Del Donahoo. Sports Director Jim Graner from 1957-1974 when sadly he passed away from cancer. Clay Conroy (Woodrow The Woodsman) who started about 1961 as a sidekick to Barnaby, eventually landing his own show. He Did "Woodrow" for a few years in Detroit before landing back at WKYC in the early 70's. He revived the Character in an IGA-sponsored "Woodrow" revival from 1997-2000 at WJW-Fox 8..
Others include Dick Goddard..who was at channel 3 from 1961-65..He moved to Philadelphia with KYW but only stayed a few weeks..**He tells of trying to get hold of Wally Kinnan at first, as Kinnan didnt want to leave Philly..but they couldnt connect with each other. Goddard was homesick so he moved back to Cleveland at WJW-8 "Because they had the Browns"..and has been at Channel 8 ever since..Mike Douglas..who did the Mike Douglas Show from KYW in Cleveland at first before moving to Philly. It was the prototype for the modern "talk/entertainment" show..Douglas, until his death last year considered Cleveland "home"

KYW pioneered "Eyewitness News" which began in Spring 1959 with anchor Pete French..KYW used the name/format until June 1965..WEWS used "Eyewitness News" in the 70's and 80's..

KYW was very independent minded when it came to pre-empting NBC..For a time around 1959 or so Channel 5 ran Huntley-Brinkley..Channel 5 also took the Tonight Show from the late 1950's till sometime in 1965..(Note:while about all of channel 5's shows were black and white the tonight show was fed and shown in color..) 3 would have late night shows like Mike Wallace's PM East/PM West or Regis Philbin if they didnt have movies..

Virgil Dominic-Always a Class Act

I would like to direct your attention today to Frank Macek's Director's Cut Blog...He has an outstanding "Where are they Now" post on Virgil Dominic, who was one of the finest Newsmen ever in Cleveland TV and by all accounts, a consummate gentleman, always kind to co-workers and employees and just a real class act. He was in Cleveland from 1965-72 as main news anchor at WKYC. He was then News Director and Anchor in Atlanta at WXIA-TV from 1972-77 where he led a young news team to the top of the ratings in Atlanta before returning to Cleveland in 1977 for a long stint as News Director, then General Manager at WJW-TV until just after the station was sold to FOX..He recently has returned to WKYC-TV as a consultant..

Looking at:August 1957 (Part One)

WJW-TV ad in TV Guide for their 2 daily and one weekend movie packages. One of them hosted by Alice Weston, already a veteran presence in Cleveland TV since 1947..

TV Guide Ad for KYW-TV's "One-o-Clock Movie" which was presented seven days a week.

Ad for the Syndicated "State Trooper" on KYW-3. Sponsored by Local Brewer Cleveland/Sandusky Brewing Co., makers of Gold Bond Beer

While this has nothing to do with TV directly, this ad was in TV Guide August 3-9, 1957. Superior Meats is based in Canton-Massillon, Ohio..Frankies was "The Keener Wiener" even 50 years ago..

We'll look today at August 1957..Around this time American Television was changing slowly, with Hollywood Studios, most notably Disney (since 1954) and Warner Brothers
getting into TV production.. There was less live production out of New York.."I Love Lucy" had just finished its last season in a half-hour format before 3 seasons as part of "Desilu Playhouse" as hour specials..

KYW-TV 3 was just getting established as a Westinghouse owned station..WEWS-TV 5 had just moved into newly built studios at 3001 Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland in Spring 1957. WJW was in fairly new studios at 1630 Euclid Avenue,,abut 2 years into Storer ownership..There were several color shows on TV this week (Aug. 3-9, 1957) all on NBC stations (3, 21).

American Bandstand with Dick Clark debuted Monday August 5, 1957 at 3PM on Channels 5 and 49..Arlene Francis' Home program on NBC was canceled Friday, August 9, 1957, lasting about 3 years..

August 24-30, 1957:A Look Back:

Cleveland Classic Media earlier looked at August 1957...Last Fall to be exact. At the time I was limited in the listings I could get for that period. A recent Trip to the Cleveland Library yielded among other listings, August 24-30, 1957,. That week was Historic as one of the more important Shows in Cleveland TV History debuted, and another show was about to begin a run that wouldnt end until at least the mid 1970's..

Captain Penny's Fun Farm at 9AM and Noon Show had begun a long run several months before.

Jay Miltner at KYW-3 and Court Stanton at WEWS-5 had competing 5 minute newscasts at 8:55 AM daily.

Jim Graner was doing weekend sportscasts at WJW-TV 8 before moving to TV 3, possibly within a few weeks after this..

Ken Coleman and Jim Britt were Televising Indians Baseball Games this season on WEWS-TV 5.

Rex Humbard and "God Is The Answer" aired twice weekly from Calvary Temple., in the same time slots on Channel 8 and WAKR-TV 49.

The two main TV Events at this particular time:

The Debut of the "One O' Clock Club"..Cleveland's first local long-form talk-entertainment show..One O Clock Club made it's bow Monday, August 26, 1957 on WEWS-TV 5. Dorothy Fuldheim hosted from the start..With Ronnie Barrett and The Timekeepers providing the music, the one hour show was a hit from the beginning, expanding to 90 minutes by January 1959 if not before..Also by this time, Bill Gordon came aboard as co-host..The show had a mostly successful 7 year run. The Debut of KYW's Mike Douglas Show in December 1961 hurt One O Clock Club in the ratings eventually and the show was cancelled in 1964.

KYW-TV 3 had not one but two full page TV Guide ads for the coming premiere of Popeye The Sailor Theatrical Cartoons on Channel 3 beginning September 2, 1957. The show began airing 5:30-6PM weeknights. At first, there was no host indicated for the half hour show, but Linn Sheldon, having been at Channel 8 earlier in 1957, most certainly have landed at channel 3 by the end of 1957 to introduce Kid show host Barnaby. Popeye remained on TV 3 with all the theatrical and made for TV cartoons well into the 1970's

The NBA begins it's fourth season Christmas Eve at 5PM on ABC with the San Francisco (Golden State) Warriors at the Seattle Supersonics..The Sonics were a first-year franchise..After 39 years in Seattle the team became the Oklahoma City Thunder, now in its second season as the Thunder..

Fall Preview:1959-60

Sort of a fun ad for TV 8 movies..

WEWS-TV/WKBN/Fisher Foods' Ad for Ken Coleman's "Quarterback Club"

Double page spread with two ads..A Jerome Kern Special and Fibber McGee and Molly, In Their second week..

Ronnie Barrett, Cleveland Radio DJ..Had hosted Classical Music on KYW-FM in the mid 1950's before becoming part of the first cast on Channel 5's One O Clock Club in 1957..Here, he hosts the 11:20 Movie after the Pete French News..

Note:I copied these pages at the Akron Downtown Library months ago..Looking at the above ad many times I just now got the pun.."The Late Night Show is well above Pa(a)r"..I can be so dense sometimes!LOL!

TV Guide Sitcom preview for 1959-60

Today, lets look at the Fall TV season of 1959-60..Fifty years ago..TV guide was touting it as the "Year Of The Special" as it were, with 400 specials on Network TV for this season..Amazing, when you consider there were only 3 networks..In those days, when a show was pre-empted for a "Special" it was usually a more different, interesting or exciting program than the normal program in that time period..These days, with 500 or more channels, the lines become blurred as far as a "special program" is comcerned.

As far as series programming, the Western reigned supreme, with a total of 29, including 10 new shows. The only Western of this group to last a long time was "Bonanza" which aired for 12 and a half seasons on NBC..Though Laramie on the same Network lasted four seasons..

Next were Private Eyes, mostly on ABC, with Warner Brothers Shows like Hawaiian Eye and Bourbon Street Beat Making their debuts., as well as The Untouchables. Most of the detective shows of this era were gone by 1963..

According to TV Guide, the Situation Comedy was making a comeback, However, of the seven new sitcoms, only 3 lasted past 59-60..Dennis The Menace, Dobie Gillis and Henessey..NBC's ill-fated attempt at remaking Fibber McGee and Molly for TV barely lasted past the Holidays..

Locally, Myrus The Mentalist made a comeback on WJW-TV 8 Tuesdays at 8PM..Bozo also premiered this season on Channel 8 with Ed Fisher in The Clown Costume..New Bishop Sheen films were to air on WEWS Channel 5, along with Notre Dame Football Replays and Mike Hammer with Darren McGavin (Incidentally airing on Retro TV Network weekends in 2009)..KYW picked up Brave Stallion (Fury Reruns) in Syndication..
