Comment:KYW-3 was carrying Tonight on delay in February 1957, but by August 1957, after Jack Paar began hosting Tonight had been dropped in favor of Movies on KYW. WEWS was not carrying "Tonight" in August..Presumably they started carrying Tonight in 1957 and would do so until fall 1965 when Tonight would return to NBC owned WKYC-TV 3. For a while in Cleveland, "The Tonight Show" was not being carried at all..

Somehow, I suspect that KYW management quit carrying the Jack Paar show to get back at NBC for forcing Westinghouse into the trade which resulted in KYW radio and TV coming to Cleveland. I can't think of any other reason because Paar was so popular on late night TV. I was born in 1960 and grew up disaproving of local stations preempting network shows for any reason at all unless there was some big local news event.
ReplyDeleteDoes Anyone know where I might view some of the Open Camera episodes on KYW from 1957. There was a particular week shot at Collinwood RR yard that I am looking for in Particular.
