Editor's note:For some reason, this post, Originally from July 19, 2008, went back into "draft" status on Blogger after being "published" for over a year..I have no idea why..So here's an encore:The first official TV Guide "Lake Erie Edition"
TV Guide proclaimed May 22-29, 1953 as "TV Baseball Appreciation Week"..Here local celebrities tell TV Guide readers what Baseball means to them..Some of the sentiments may come across as a bit corny when looking at Baseball today, but it was a much different time..
Ad for Tom Field News on WNBK/4 and WTAM/1100..Just 5 minutes Monday-Saturday..
Ad for WXEL-9 Cleveland Indians Telecasts..
First Edition of "Channel Chatter" News of local and national TV personalites. Of particular Interest is John Kinsella leaving WXEL to go to Kansas City KCTY-This station was DuMont Affiliated on channel 25 and as the article said, owned by Herbert Mayer. At the time there was only WDAF-4 on the air in Kansas City..KCTY-25 signed on June 9, 1953..By the end of the year Channels 5 qnd 9 popped up in KC..Not able to weather the new competition, Mayer sold channel 25 in December 1953 to DuMont Itself which only ran it for 2 months before shutting it down in February 1954..
WFMJ-TV 73-On the air about 6 weeks at this point..Exclusive for NBC in Youngstown..
Early Ad for WKBN-Heralding 3 "Big Networks" for Youngstown's TV Viewers
Today We'll look at TV Guide's Debut in Cleveland..Triangle Publications of Philadelphia had acquired a number of local TV magazines all over the US with the idea of unifying them into a single national magazine with locally produced daily listings..TV Guide's New York Edition debuted April 3, 1953..Over the next several weeks, more editions would roll out in different parts of the country. Cleveland's TV Guide premiered May 23, 1953..Known as the Lake Erie Edition. For the first year or so, TV Guide would hold to a Friday-Thursday Publication schedule.. On July 17, 1954 they would go the long familiar Saturday-Friday Schedule.. October 6, 2005 Thet went with Sunday-Saturday till the end of the small digest TV Guide..
Also by this time (Late 1954) they became known as the "Cleveland" Edition
The first week there would only be 5 stations listed..4, 5, and 9 in Cleveland..27 and 73 in Youngstown..A far cry from the eventual 17 stations they woulld carry by the mid seventies..In places like Toledo, Erie and Akron/Canton..TV Guide would eventually split off into "Cleveland Metro" and "Youngstown/Erie" editions by 1978..
In this first TV Guide, aside from the ads, etc. mentioned above, there are local articles about "Captain Glenn" Rowell of WNBK-4, who had earlier teamed with Gene Carroll on the radio in the 30's and 40's..now both in Cleveland as TV stars..and an article by Miss Paige Palmer.."Don't be a Parking Poop" advising Young Girls how to act around Boys when dating..

Thanks to Cleveland Public Library-Main Downtown branch for their kind assistance..
Johnny Andrews, who was shown in that first TV Guide, later moved to New York where he worked for years at WRCA radio and TV (the latter now WNBC; the former known as WNBC for years but is now WFAN), and by the mid-1960's was at WCBS-TV where he provided weather reports. At WRCA he was the first host of a late afternoon movie show that debuted in 1956 as "Evening Theatre," but by February 1957 would become "Movie 4," which would last until 1974.
