Live, Out Of town TV comes to Cleveland..

Notice to WEWS Viewers on an attempt to bring a live telecast of a Red Sox/Tigers game from Detroit Septmber 20, 1948.
Notice in the Plain Dealer September 21, 1948 on the success of the "Live" experiment..An ABC Dedication broadcast was shown later that night (The first live network broadcast to Cleveland)..WNBK was about a month away and would already be connected to NBC's Midwest Network..

September 1948 was the beginning of big things in Northeast Ohio Television.Plans were put in motion for live, network broadcasts to Cleveland..The first of these was a Detroit/Boston American League Baseball Game September 20, 1948..As we see in the above articles, it was a mammoth undertaking just to air one Baseball Game from Detroit to Cleveland..About this time also WEWS aired an ABC-TV Inaugral Show live from Chicago..These were the first "On Location" telecasts ever seen live in Cleveland..When we compare with how easily and relatively cheaply remote telecasting is done today..Very Intriguing.

Cleveland Comedy Company-1980

Here, from 1980 courtesy of Cleveland Memory Grenade, are a couple of parts of what appears to be an hour comedy special, reminiscent of Satuday Night Live. This show may have been a monthly series, but am not sure about that as yet. Paul Tapie heads up a young comedy troupe in a number of blackouts and comedy sketches, with guest Jay Lawrence, then of WBBG-1260AM. Lawrence earlier had been at KYW/WKYC-1100AM from 1961-67. He is credited with the long drawn out "laugh" that ended many of the Channel 8 Hoolihan and Big Chuck skits over the years. Bill Ward, later of WJW-TV, is the announcer. Here are what I consider the most interesting parts of the special..As with most shows of this type, some of the jokes work better than others, but It is interesting to see how much of Channel 5, in particular gets spoofed here and what they got away with..This show was aired on a Friday Night at 11:30PM

The "related videos" should have the parts I don't post here, as well as some promo spots for the show..Cleveland Radio Legend Bob James produced the show.

Opening segment

Highlights:A "retro-look" WEWS station ID..An opening disclaimer "No white socks or Kielbasa here"..

The Best overall part in my mind:

A funny spoof of local Cleveland TV News in 1980 with "Smiling Mona Mona" and "Overpaid Doug Hambrick" "EyewitnessActionCenterNews"

Paul Tapie, in a YouTube Comment, says that they almost sold this show to Paramount in Syndication. Interesting artifact of the early 1980's..Anybody with more info about the date this show aired, or if it was a series..email or comment..Thanks..

Classic Cleveland Personalities-1954

<
Joe Portaro, Beauty and Fashion Expert, moved over from WNBK-Channel 3 to WXEL-8 recently. His show aired daily from 3:00=3:15PM. It was apparently a big ticket according to this TV Guide ad, even for a 15-minute show..

Here is a wonderful photograph from Cleveland Memory Project/Cleveland Press Collection..Original photo descruption:

Seven veterans.

"In point of service, these are the oldest performers on WEWS which is celebrating its seventh birthday today. From upper left to the bottom: Paige Palmer, Crandall Hendershott, Rachel VanCleve, Bob Dale, Randy Culver, Dorothy Fuldheim, and Gene Carroll. WXEL observes its fifth year on the air today." End quote

This would appear to be from on or about December 17, 1954. Brief profiles below:

Paige Palmer, Beauty/exercise hostess
Rachel Van Cleve-Hosted "Mixing Bowl" cooking show
Randy Culver-Announcer, Newsman, musical soloist on various programs
Crandall Hendershott-Organist-Teamed with Culver on several shows
Bob Dale-Hosted many variety shows-Probably the most popular personality on WEWS at the time. More on Dale Below
Dorothy Fulheim-News Commentator
Gene Carroll-Kids Host "Uncle Jake", Gene Carroll Talent Show

TV Guide Ad Map advertising WNBK-TV's coverage area due to it's recent (April 25, 1954) move from channel 4 to channel 3..This was done to reduce/eliminate interference with WWJ-4 in Detroit and WEWS-5.

Bob Dale at the "weatherboard" from his days at KNSD 7/39, the NBC-TV affiliate in San Diego. Special thanks to Kerrie Briggs, Art Director of KNSD 7/39 for the use of the photo.

The main reason for this blog post is to mention one of the fine early performers of Cleveland Television, Bob Dale, who passed away May 26, 2008 at the age of 83.He was born Robert Dale Bergmayr in Canton March 26, 1925. After serving in World War II, he attended Case Western Reserve University on the GI Bill. He began at WEWS-TV 5 around May, 1948. He jokes that "They were looking for anyone over 21 who could talk." Dale, like many performers in early TV did many kinds of programs..Among them The Bob Dale Show, and Ten Thirty Theater. He also appreared on such shows as TV IQ, Fun With Charades, and Pooch Parade, which was revived as a segment of "Captain Penny's Camedy Clubhouse" in the 1960s. He was best known in Cleveland for Dinner Platter, a informal show featuring other WEWS employees and special guests, generally airing at varied times around 4-6PM weeknights. He also served as weatherman.

After winning several awards as most popular performer in Cleveland TV, he moved out to San Diego, Califoria in 1956. Because of a World War II injury to his ears, doctors suggested he move out west to help the healing process. He started at KFMB-8, the CBS affiliate, where he did many of the same things he did at WEWS. His popularity was such that he became an Icon in San Diego, Hosting Movie Shows, doing weather and many other kinds of programs. His biggest regional/national success was Zoorama, featuring the San Diego Zoo, broadcast locally from the 50's, on CBS in 1965 and in national syndication 1968-70.

Dale moved across town to KNSD-7/39, San Diego's NBC affiliate in January, 1978 where he was part of the weather team and did other shows and specials until his retirement in 2001.

Condolences to his wife Marilyn and his family.

August 24-30, 1957:A Look Back:

TV Guide Ad for "God Is The Answer" from Rex Humbard's Calvary Temple..Later to be Cathedral of Tomorrow.

Photo of Dorothy with Comedian Bob Hope on One O'Clock Club, taken in the early 1960's. A short video clip of this interview (which originally was in 5 parts) is below. Photo also courtesy CSU Special Collections.

TV Guide Ad for Popeye on KYW-TV 3..Starting Sept. 2, 1957.. Anyone that can help improve this picture would be appreciated..

TV Guide Ad for the Channel 8 Debut of Victory at Sea. This award-winning series originally aired on NBC in 1952-53.

Wikipedia Article:

Cleveland Classic Media earlier looked at August 1957...Last Fall to be exact. At the time I was limited in the listings I could get for that period. A recent Trip to the Cleveland Library yielded among other listings, August 24-30, 1957,. That week was Historic as one of the more important Shows in Cleveland TV History debuted, and another show was about to begin a run that wouldnt end until at least the mid 1970's..

Captain Penny's Fun Farm at 9AM and Noon Show had begun a long run several months before.
Jay Miltner at KYW-3 and Court Stanton at WEWS-5 had competing 5 minute newscasts at 8:55 AM daily.
Jim Graner was doing weekend sportscasts at WJW-TV 8 before moving to TV 3, possibly within a few weeks after this..
Ken Coleman and Jim Britt were Televising Indians Baseball Games this season on WEWS-TV 5.
Rex Humbard and "God Is The Answer" aired twice weekly from Calvary Temple., in the same time slots on Channel 8 and WAKR-TV 49.
The two main TV Events at this particular time:

The Debut of the "One O' Clock Club"..Cleveland's first local long-form talk-entertainment show..One O Clock Club made it's bow Monday, August 26, 1957 on WEWS-TV 5. Dorothy Fuldheim hosted from the start..With Ronnie Barrett and The Timekeepers providing the music, the one hour show was a hit from the beginning, expanding to 90 minutes by January 1959 if not before..Also by this time, Bill Gordon came aboard as co-host..The show had a mostly successful 7 year run. The Debut of KYW's Mike Douglas Show in December 1961 hurt One O Clock Club in the ratings eventually and the show was cancelled in 1964.

You Tube Clip of Dorothy Fuldheim and Bill Gordon hosting One O Clock Club, along with part of an interview Dorothy Fuldheim did with Bob Hope..

KYW-TV 3 had not one but two full page TV Guide ads for the coming premiere of Popeye The Sailor Theatrical Cartoons on Channel 3 beginning September 2, 1957. The show began airing 5:30-6PM weeknights. At first, there was no host indicated for the half hour show, but Linn Sheldon, having been at Channel 8 earlier in 1957, most certainly have landed at channel 3 by the end of 1957 to introduce Kid show host Barnaby. Popeye remained on TV 3 with all the theatrical and made for TV cartoons well into the 1970's

King Features Made For TV Popeye Cartoon "Spare Dat Tree"..From the early 1960's.. Special thanks to YouTube member mrmanok. I grew up on these cartoons watching Barnaby and Woodrow..

October 1965-Changes on the Horizon..

Here is a listing for a somewhat unusual special..A chance for Ernie to shine outside the "Ghoulardi" persona..The Skits on this special have been shown for years on the Hoolihan and Big Chuck/Big Chuck and Lil John Show..

Ad for the Locally programmed "Friday Night Movie" on WEWS Channel 5

Ad for an early evening showing of the syndicated "Sea Hunt" on WAKR-TV 49

Ad for "3 On The Town"..In its first incarnation..As we mentioned in a series last year on this program, This show lasted 3 years and went through so many changes it seemingly couldnt build an audience..

There was a Monday Night Movie on Channel 8..What was unusual about it was the movie would run an hour, then break for 20 minutes of news at 11, then continue the movie to its conclusion

October 1965 ad for Wally Kinnan, newly arrived from Philadelphia to become TV 3's main weather forecaster..Recently I did a profile on Kinnan here on the blog..

Today we'll take an in depth look at October, 1965..specifically the 23rd-29th of October..The major News Story was the Gemini 6 Manned spaceflight..All the networks covered the event thouroughly on their news programs..

KYW-TV 3 sign-off by Gordon Ward from 1956..Not long after the move from Philadelphia..Notice the Catchy Jingle just before the sign-off..KYW was at 815 Superior Avenue at this time..The sign-off was probably on a Saturday night-Sunday Morning. While this is now on the Internet Archive, I'd like to thank Jerry Immel of Atlanta for sharing this clip..He has many others which I'd like to introduce over time..Just click on the player to listen..

In the next couple of articles I'd like to look at News Media reaction to the NBC/Westinghouse 1956 swap in the form of two articles from Radio/TV writers Art Cullison of the Akron Beacon Journal and Stan Anderson of the Cleveland Press..First up:Art Cullison

KYW COMES TO OHIO
WTAM, WNBK Lineusps Revamped

By Art Cullison,
Akron Beacon Journal Radio/TV Writer
Sundsy, February 12, 1956

WTAM and WNBK will officially become KYW and KYW-TV at 11:55 AM tomorrow (2-13-56) as the new owners, Westinghouse Broadcasting Co., shake up the programming lineup but continue to carry NBC radio and television shows.

Here are a few changes coming into effect on KYW Radio this week:

A New farm show will be presented Mondays through Saturdays from 5:30-6 AM. Bill Mayer, the Morning Disk Jockey will be heard from 6-9:30 AM six days a week.

"Mildred and Gloria", a woman's program, will be heard daily from 9:30 to 10:15 AM with NBC's "Weekday" following Mildred Funnell and Gloria Brown.

Mayer will Emcee an Afternoon musical program and Joe Mulvihill will spin platters from 5 to 7:30 PM. "Night Music" will be heard from 10:15 to 1 each evening. The first 75 minutes will stress semi-classical and operetta music. from 11:30 on there will be concert pieces and heavier classics..

(Comment:imagine trying to put heavy classical music on a large AM station today...Or any kind of music for that matter..lol)

By Special Arrangement with the British Broadcasting Co., KYW will present Shakespeare plays every Friday at Midnight. There will be a program of Modern Jazz Saturdays from 1 to 3 PM

At Midnight on Saturdays, KYW will present two-hour symphonies in their entirety. Sunday afternoons there will be a program of sweet popular music hosted by Jerry Liebman,

Dr. Bergen Evans, author and lecturer, will deliver a series of spoken essays "Of Many Things" Sundays at 6:15 PM starting next week, and Dr. Helen Parkhurst, child psychologist, will present a recorded series on juvenile delinquency and child development problems Sundays at 7 PM.

And here are some changes for KYW TV:

Tom Haley will Emcee "Morning Surprise" daily at 9 (AM) There will be remote telecssts from spots around Cleveland, interviews, and news.

"The Big R," a series of live and filmed programs discussing the national education problem and Cleveland in particular, will be seen Saturdays at 2:30 PM. "Juvenile Justice" a "live" show in which guest judges hold simulated court trials for Juvenile offenders will be seen Sundays at 10:30 AM..

Tuesday, December 16, 1947-The night before TV Day.. In Cleveland

Part of a Cleveland Press special section about the opening of WEWS-TV..Included is an FM primer and a TV 5 coverage area map

Cleveland Press Radio Guide for Tuesday night-Wednesday December 16-17, 1947

I thought we'd share another of our relatively rare postings on Radio... Focusing on Cleveland AM/FM radio the night before WEWS-TV 5 signed on the air for the first time..The last night that Cleveland would be a "Radio-only" city. Cleveland radio personalities of the era included Jimmy Dudley of WJW-850, Tom Manning at WTAM-1100, Bob Neal at WGAR-1220 and Dorothy Fuldheim, already doing commentary at WEWS-102.1 FM in advance of Channel 5's sign-on (WEWS-FM had only been on the air about 3 weeks at this time) The main AM stations in Cleveland were joined by WSRS 1490 and WJMO 1540..As well as a number of FM statons..

By 1950, TV would pretty much copy the major radio schedule patterns at ths time:News/Light entertainment in the mornings.."Dramas" in the afternoon..News in the early evening and Prime time about 8-11PM..While Radio by 1960 completely changed to music and news..almost no entertainment peograms except for a few soaps on CBS, Gunsmoke, Suspense
and "Johnny Dollar"

I would love to have heard WJMO-1540 is this time period..seems like it might be quite entertaining..
