WTOF Returns-To Alabama

A note of interest I saw while looking at the June "Popular Communications" Radio Hobby Magazine..WTOF, the longtime call letters of Canton religious station WTOF 98.1 FM and for a short time used on AM 900 in Canton by Mortenson Broadcasting, Have been reassigned by the FCC to the former WBCA-AM 1110 in Bay Minette, Alabama, owned by Evangelist Buddy Tucker, as a companion to his WMOB 1360-AM..According to the history link below,WTOF-1110 runs all Syndicated religious programming..not unlike WTOF-FM Canton in its heyday, Though much of the programming was local as well. Of course, WTOF-FM is now WKDD-98.1..Owned by Clear Channel since 2001..And AM 900 has been WCER for nearly 15 years under the direction of Jack Ambrozic..and runs a News/Talk/Religious format.. One wonders if Rev. Tucker uses the slogan "Tower of Faith" as Mortenson did for so many years with WTOF-FM

  1. Even though it's been over 10 years since WTOF became WHK-FM I still feel as a Christian and a Southern Gospel fan, that I was personally robbed by Salem Communications.

I have before that I somewhat understand why, it still bothers me that they would turn their heads away from a portion of the population who don't have any technical savvy or maybe can't afford computers.

It is an honor to hear from you. The call letters WTOF have a special meaniong to me..as when they were on 98.1 FM in Canton, Ohio..One of my favorite stations as a young Christian in the late 1970's..

  4. WTOF's programming helped me through some very, very difficult times as a deeply troubled young man during the early to middle 90s. I would love to be able to locate an old program listing so I can write two of the pastors that made such a difference.

  5. I find it hard to beleive that it has been almost 38 years since I worked at WTOF-Canton, Ohio. It was 1972, and their studios were (as I recall) in the Marchants Bank Building.

I was a student in Akron, and worked late afternoons into the evening. There were several paid programs, along with a music segement I hosted called the "Afternoon Caravan."

  6. Hello Anderson County:
Thanks for stopping by..I delivered The Canton Repository Newspaper to downtown Canton merchants in the 1980's. One of my stops was WTOF in the Peoples-Merchants, later Ameritrust Bank building..They used to let me take home some of the broadcasting business/industry magazines they had in their lobby..Good people there..The same building today is home to "Joy 1520", WINW Radio..An Urban Gospel station in Canton..

On another note, I would love to hear airchecks of WTOF when you were there in '72..Would be quite interesting..
