thanks for the trip down memory lane.
ReplyDeleteTim...
ReplyDeleteYOU ROCK!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the stuff you do..
Keep them coming!
Interesting how Ernie Anderson was doing weather at WJW in addition to his "Ghoulardi" gig - similar to "Hoolihan" a few years later, I see.
ReplyDeleteAs for Steve Allen's show that KYW-TV aired: It left the air only a few months after the day spotlighted in this entry, as he had been tapped to replace Garry Moore as host of "I've Got a Secret." I'll have to check to see which of the Cleveland stations aired Steverino's 1968-71 talk show.
Now, I realize that back in those days that news was all business and all that back but it seems to me that some of those guys went out of their way more than others to show seriousness. In fact, some pictures I've seen they looked practically mean. I hold put that Paul Burke fellow as a prime example.
ReplyDeleteEarnie Anderson doing the weekday weather? I always thought that was Howard Hoffman's gig before Hoolihan and later Dick Goddard took over.
ReplyDeleteKYW had prior commitments with the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company, it's then parent company, to carry the Steve Allen Show instead of NBC's Tonight show. Earlier, it had commitments with the owners to carry PM East/West, and before that the late movies. Therefore, WEWS-5 offered to carry the Tonight program. Steve Allen's late 60s show was carried by Channel 8 from 1968 until early 1970.
ReplyDeleteThe Ghoulardi ad for the Saturday show brought back so many memories. When I was a kid, I went with a Cub Scout group down to Channel 8 to see the show in person. It must have been along about the time the ad appeared. I was fascinated by everything I saw. The studio was much smaller than I expected, and there was a single color camera, which I believe was the first color camera in Cleveland. There also were two or three black and white cameras that weren't being used. Some of the lights overhead still had the old call letters, WXEL, stenciled on them. At the end of the show, they lined us all up to be on television, but it was never to be. The show ended early because of some sort of news bulletin from New York.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Dick Thompson (on the WYTV news ad) ever did television. He, of course, was first news director and then PD (for literally decades!) at WHOT radio, then more recently was on the air at WSOM in Salem. Great stuff, as always!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this info. I have been looking for clips, articles, photos etc. regarding Marjorie Mariner's show Kitchen Corner, because my Mom use to be the pastry chef on the show. I'm hoping to give my Mom a "happy 80th" birthday surprise with a trip down memory lane. Thanks for any suggestions on where I might look further.
