Today I want to give a good look at radio in the mid-1950's..KYW-AM/FM seemed to be a mixture of big band, jazz and classsical music along with some NBC Drama/Comedy shows...The last days of Old Time Radio were upon us and radio was changing more into music and news intensive programmming..Between the Akron Beacon Journal and the Canton Repository, I want to share the Radio Schedules of one particular day..

I hope to do the Stan Anderson/Cleveland Press article next about KYW..This post sort of got bigger than I figured..
Very informative Tim. One thing I would like to add for the old time radio fans like yourself. On iTunes you can subscribe to Legacy of Laughs, where you get an old time radio program downloaded free every week. Shows like Burns and Allen, Martin and Lewis, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, and Stan Freeberg. All free from iTunes.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds to me like Bill Mayer was run nationally on NBC (though I could be wrong on that), as his "Mayer in the Morning" show was also mentioned on a 1957 sign-off of WRCV-TV in Philadelphia by announcer Frank Carter (ne Kastner; likewise from Jerry Immel's collection). Unless between 1956 and 1957 Mr. Mayer moved from Cleveland to Philly.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see that KYW/WTAM and WGAR did not broadcast 24/7 in those days.
ReplyDeleteI need some help on researching WTAM Morning Bandwagon Show w/Henry Hot Lips Levine..can anyone help me out?
