Actually the station signed on in April of 1953 in New Castle, Pennsylvania originally as an independent until they acquired the rights to ABC and Dumont network programming a few months later. This version of channel 45 signed off the first week of January, 1955,,,the TV GUIDE announcement mentioned that, amongst other issues, they were planning on moving their facilities to Youngstown Ohio which they did. In November of 1957 they were broadcasting from their current studios at 3800 Shady Run Road. In late November or early December of 1959 the station switched to the 33 designation, becoming WYTV in September of 1963 (not 1964) on the first day of the ABC fall season.

(By the way, WKST-TV was in no ways connected with WKST radio which is still broadcasting as part of Clear Channel. I was told that the original owners of the television station had concocted some sort of "fishy" scam to use these call letters since the FCC was very wary of giving broadcasters who were not established in radio licenses. After awhile the FCC reversed this decision only to change their minds later on, but for the record the two stations were not related in any way other than their call letters.)

Actually I don't fault you a bit for these errors, since the Wikipedia listing for channel 33 has these very mistakes and its not like there is much information, correct or otherwise, readily available. I've done the research and thought you'd like to be corrected on these rather minute errors.

Great blog...please post more! (I'm looking for more information on the long-gone WICA-TV channel 15 in Ashtabula myself!)Christopher Stiglianohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17107248034597839482noreply@blogger.com
